Area of Circles
This lesson covers the calculation of the area of circles. Students will learn the relationship between the radius and the area, how to use the π button on a calculator, and how to apply this knowledge to semi-circles and algebraic rearrangement.
Learning objectives
- Recall and use the formula for the area of a circle: A = πr².
- Calculate the area of a circle when given either the radius or the diameter.
- Calculate the area of compound shapes involving parts of circles (semi-circles and quarter-circles).
- Solve 'reverse' problems to find the radius when the area is known.

Key vocabulary
- Radius
- The distance from the centre of a circle to any point on its circumference.
- Diameter
- The distance across a circle passing through the centre (twice the radius).
- Pi (π)
- A mathematical constant approximately equal to 3.14159... representing the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter.
- Area
- The total space contained inside the boundary of a 2D shape.
- Circumference
- The perimeter or distance around the outside of a circle.
