Introduction to Waves: Properties and Calculations
This lesson introduces Year 9 students to the fundamental properties of waves. It covers the two main types of waves (transverse and longitudinal), their physical characteristics, and the mathematical relationship between wave speed, frequency, and wavelength.
Learning objectives
- Describe the difference between transverse and longitudinal waves.
- Define the terms amplitude, wavelength, frequency, and period.
- Identify the parts of a wave including crests, troughs, compressions, and rarefactions.
- Apply the wave speed equation (v = fλ) to calculate wave properties.

- Hertz (Hz)
- The unit of frequency, equal to one cycle per second.
- Period
- The time it takes for one full cycle of the wave to pass a point.
