The Electromagnetic Spectrum Teaching Pack
A comprehensive lesson on the Electromagnetic Spectrum covering the properties, uses, and dangers of EM waves, including mathematical applications of the wave equation.
Learning objectives
- State the seven regions of the electromagnetic spectrum in order of frequency and wavelength.
- Describe the properties common to all electromagnetic waves.
- Explain the applications and hazards associated with different regions of the EM spectrum.
- Apply the wave speed equation (v = fλ) to calculate frequency, wavelength, or speed.

Key vocabulary
- Transverse Wave
- A wave where the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer.
- Frequency
- The number of waves passing a point per second, measured in Hertz (Hz).
- Wavelength
- The distance between two consecutive peaks or troughs of a wave.
- Vacuum
- A space entirely devoid of matter.
- Ionising Radiation
- Radiation with enough energy to remove electrons from atoms, potentially damaging DNA.
Core worksheet (first questions)
- Describe the relationship between frequency and wavelength across the EM spectrum.
- Explain why we can see a rainbow but cannot see radio waves.
- Describe the danger of Gamma radiation to human cells.
- A wave has a frequency of 500 Hz and a wavelength of 0.1 metres. Calculate its speed.
